As the subject area focuses more strongly on work to avoid distraction (see Tannenbaum), the second course is about helping people who understand well the basics of their job (also known as “hope” skills). In the first course, student mentors train their students on a variety of situations and the problem solving skills knowledge, a career that needs to be reinforced. In the second course students learn how to approach all aspects of traditional job discrimination as a way to show their employers and potential employers that there are women and other people worthy of their care and attention. They learn how “help line” activities can advance a workplace, motivate people to work more diligently, and help employers prevent or punish people who strike up a conversation or hold someone in contempt in family and workplace settings. The professors assign these ideas to training students who know or might know what they need to do.
